probably could've articulated this better LOL, you can obviously "leave" the grammys by not watching it, but mainstream culture is forced upon us, and there's this feeling that you have to participate in it in order to connect w other people.. i dont see tik tok as a solution to "bring us together" but was moreso reflecting on how exciting artistry is coming thru the internet rather than big labels. this couldve been more cutting in its critique of capitalism but it is what it is...
there was discourse abt kate bush becoming mainstream and my reaction was yeaahhh we should want good art to reach a wide audience. at the same time tho the american "mainstream" is a lost cause & i only think abt it bc im related to it, like a cousin
lyrics
watching the grammys
is like a sad family reunion
that you cant leave
a stale glass of water that sits on the counter for days like the cousins you see once a year
and just dont connect with like you used to, you used to make music
you used to feel so inspired
some people hate tik tok for good reasons but it fosters independent and communal creative thought
and can bring us together if we ignore the corporate teen angst acronym breakup songs
we should want kate bush to be mainstream
and we should fight for better culture, better music, better songs
the more we lean into our old institutions
the harder it is to unionize
although sony music has their hands in everything
they're clueless, playing catch-up to culture cuz they're dull and useless
yeah they make up awards and still get em wrong
